The Berkeley Independent captured second place for General Excellence in the 2012 South Carolina Press Association Awards. It is the newspaper’s second top-two finish in the past three years.
An awards ceremony was held Saturday in Greenville.
“I am thrilled that The Independent has again been recognized as one of state’s top weekly newspapers,” Independent Editor Frank Johnson said. “Moncks Corner deserves the best newspaper in South Carolina, and I’m grateful that others are recognizing our hard work towards that goal.”
Independent staff writer Dan Brown captured four awards for writing, including second place for Sports Column Writing, third place for Humor Column, second place for Sports Feature Story, and third place for Profile Feature Story.
Reporter Stefan Rogenmoser was honored with three awards, including first place for news photo and news reporting.
Johnson captured six awards, including first place for headline writing and news reporting, and second place for page design.
Longtime Independent columnist Julie Smith captured a third place for Humor Column.
