District 102 meeting announced
Rep. Joe Jefferson announced that residents who live in Berkeley and Dorchester's District 102 are invited to a meeting that will be held on Thursday evening, March 28, at Berkeley Middle School in Moncks Corner from 6 - 8 p.m. in the multipurpose auditorium.
This will be an evening full of great information. Bags of free materials as well as supplies will be given to you.
The following representatives and personnel will be there: AARP and their demonstrations, Voter Registration Office Personnel, Berkeley County Police Department Crime Watch, and Medicaid and Medicare Experts.
You will have a opportunity to ask questions as well as get answers. Please come and participate, and learn from the experts in attendance.
Alzheimer’s support groups continue
The local Alzheimer’s Association has three caregiver support groups in the area held at different locations on the second Monday of each month.
Locations are the Goose Creek library (5:30-6:30 p.m.) on Old Moncks Corner Road, Moncks Corner Medical Center (11 a.m – noon) on N. Live Oak Drive, and the Otranto Road library (1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.) in North Charleston.

Relay for Life May 3-4
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a 12-hour team event that brings people from local businesses, schools, churches and families together for a night under the stars while team members take turns walking or running around the track. Relay For Life of Lower Berkeley is having its event this year on May 3-4 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at Cane Bay High School.
As a cancer survivor, you have something to celebrate! We invite you to show your courage and spirit. Join cancer survivors of all ages, their caregivers, and friends for a lap around the track during the Relay For Life Survivors’ ceremony.
You do not have to be a member of a Relay team or pay a fee to be involved in any of the survivors’ celebrations, but you do have to register.

Reading Council meets April 11
The Berkeley Reading Council – the local chapter of the South Carolina International Reading Association – was recently honored by the national organization for the 22nd consecutive year for its work to promote reading in the community as well as schools.
The council’s next meeting will be April 11 at Goose Creek City Hall at 6 p.m. when local youth will be honored for their writing prowess as part of the Young Writers’ Awards.
The meeting is open to the public.
Plant sale April 20, May 18
The Friends of Cypress Gardens non-profit plant, flower and tree sale will take place April 20 and May 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of Cypress Gardens.
Master Gardeners will answer your gardening questions. Bring two cups of dry soil to be sent off for soil test ($6 fee).

Diabetes Alert Day March 30
The Nu Alpha Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is celebrating Diabetes Alert Day from 10 a.m. to Noon on March 30 at the Santee Cooper Auditorium in Moncks Corner.
Blood drive set for April 9
The First Presbyterian Church of Moncks Corner will host a Red Cross blood drive on April 9 from 2 to 7 p.m.

First Steps meets April 11
The Berkeley County First Steps Partnership Board encourages the public to attend its meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 11in the Berkeley County School District board room 229, East Main Street in Moncks Corner.

Filipino council Easter Egg Hunt March 31
The Tri-County Council of Filipino Presidents / Chairpersons of Charleston is sponsoring the Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, March 31 at the FCC site in Moncks Corner (corner of Hwy. 52 and Oakley Road).
The event is set for 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Children ages 2 to 12 will enjoy the egg hunt, games and prizes, and there will be plenty of food for everyone.
Free wellness classes continue
Roper St. Francis Families for a Healthy Heart program teaches easy ways to be healthy and active. The program is offering a series of free wellness classes to be held at Howe Hall AIMS school in Goose Creek through April.
Sessions are planned for April 11 and April 27.
County Republican Convention set for April 15
Berkeley County Republican Party Chairman Terry Hardesty issued a Call to Convention this week for the party’s April 15 county convention.
The event will be held at Stratford High School in Goose Creek.
The convention will include election of officers for the 2013-2014 term, and election of delegates and alternate delegates to the South Carolina Republican Party Convention, which is set to be held May 4 at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia.
The April 15 convention will include a registration period from 6-7 p.m. The convention will be held from 7-9 p.m. Registration fees are $10 for members and guests.
