Beech Hill Elementary School Fifth graders with U.S. Air Force Lt. Col Hiram Mann, a member of the famous Tuskegee Airmen. The fifth graders at Beech Hill Elementary School spent the afternoon with a Tuskegee Airman. Lt. Col. Mann visited Beech Hill and shared his experiences as a combat pilot with the Tuskegee Airmen. Mann was accepted into the Tuskegee Program in 1942, completed flight training in 1944 and became a “Red Tail” pilot. He served in the 332nd Fighter Group, flying P51-D Mustangs.
The Third Grade at Summerville Elementary School held their Walk For Water recently. The Walk benefits Water Missions International, their Service Learning Project. All year they have been learning about the millions of people around the world who do not have clean water to drink. Water Missions International helps to bring wells and water purification systems to help these people. The grade level walked to raise money and awareness. Third and fourth grade students at Windsor Hill Arts Infused Elementary School were very fortunate to have two musicians from Charleston Academy of Music present to them during a recent Fine Arts class. Flutist Christine Arant and clarinetist Philip Lipton played for the students, instructed them on the Woodwind Family of the Orchestra, and spoke about the CAM Program. The students especially enjoyed hearing “The Pink Panther Theme” played as an instrumental duet. The Charleston Academy of Music is the premier musical institution for the Lowcountry’s youth. The Summerville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.’s “Delta Academy” recently participated in the Mu Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi's Annual Black History Quiz Bowl at the Citadel. This was their first time participating. Two teams from Delta Academy (6th - 8th grade) competed against Laing Middle School and Charleston Development Academy. Team 1 defeated Laing Middle, then competed against Charleston Development Academy, clinched first place, and won the $100 first place prize. Team 2 lost to Charleston Development Academy and Laing Middle in the final round. Team 2 placed fourth.
