Hanahan Middle School Principal Robin Rogers has received a special honor in his 13th year as principal.
That award is the Palmetto's Finest distinction that HMS has won.
“We're walking pretty high right now,” Rogers said. “We had to submit a 20-page application in August. From there they processed all the applications of the state.
“If you made it through that you were named as getting a visit. We received the first visit. We received a second visit in late February.”
A different team of school administrators from around the state made two visits to the school.
“No room was left unturned,” Rogers said. “They have a rubric they fill out . . . community involvement, leadership, instruction, student achievement.”
When time for the big announcement came the afternoon of March 11 several employees and members from the Berkeley County School District office, parents and students gathered in the media center to watch the SCETV broadcast in which they were announced a winner.
“We celebrated,” Rogers said. “Everybody was happy, ecstatic. The whole faculty. Parents, students, community members.
“As soon as they announced it everybody jumped up and clapped, hugged, cried . . . just to know the process you went through is one thing but to know the dedication and hard work and pride faculty kids and community have in school on a daily basis. the award validates all the hard work the community does.”
Rogers was presented with a plaque and banner.
HMS has previously won awards such as the Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School of Excellence and was named a Red Carpet School.
