Lady Stags on a roll
Following a regular season opening loss to Stratford, the Berkeley Lady Stags softball team is suddenly playing like butter.
They are on a roll.
The Lady Stags broke open a 2-2 tie against West Ashley with four runs in the third and three in the fourth and held off a late Wildcats rally to win 9-6 in action last week. Brooklyn Stone went the distance for the win.
Peyton Svagerko smacked a pair of three-baggers and drove in four runs to lead the team. Jessica Stanley chipped in with a double and a triple of her own and two RBIs in the win.
Blake Ponder had three base hits and a pair of RBIs.
In the loss to the Lady Knights, Berkeley battled back from a 12-3 deficit to make the game close, and set the stage for two big wins last week.
“If you could call it a good loss, it was,” said BHS Coach Boogie Grooms, who had to scramble after losing three starters to injury before the March 8 contest with West Ashley. “We battled back and put ourselves in a position to win. We just came up a little short.”
Against Timberland, the Lady Stags broke out the big bats, posting a 15-3 win over the Lady Wolves. Jessica Stanley picked up the win in a complete game, and Payton Pinson led the offensive charge with a homer and three RBIs.
Ashtin Kullnat had a pair of hits, including a single and a double with 2 RBIs.
Tiffany Welch had a pair of doubles and Kristin Bennett two triples to lead the Lady Wolves.
Berkeley plays at home this week against Goose Creek, hits the road for a rematch with West Ashley, and closes out the week on Friday at home looking for a measure of revenge against Stratford.
