Kyle Garrick is money.
The fourth year starter who is just a junior homered in extra innings to lift the Berkeley Stags to a 3-2 win over defending Class AAAA state champion Ashley Ridge to capture the American Legion Post 166 Pre-Season Invitational Tournament championship.
The Foxes mounted a last ditch rally to try and tie the game, but Stags reliever Joe Glauser snuffed out the rally leaving the tying run stranded on third to pick up the win in relief of Andrew Lockliear.
The Stags ran through the seeding portion of the tournament with solid wins over Timberland, 7-4, and Fort Dorchester. The Patriots win was a result of a 2-0 no-hitter by Zach Gonzales.
Offense came at a premium in the tournament championship with bitter cold temperatures and a biting wind.
Berkeley got on the board in the second on a two-out RBI single by Dylan Baker and then added a second run as Eric Orton scored Garrick's sacrifice fly, his first of two RBIs on the night.
Ashley Ridge bounced back with single runs in the third and fourth off Lockliear.
In the third, Josh Litchfield and Rusty Grayson both reached on two-out walks. Jason Miller then followed with a single to right to score Litchfield. Miller's 3 for 4 performance led the Ashley Ridge offense.
In the fourth, the Swamp Foxes tied the game when pinch runner Ben Beresky scored on an error.
The score would remain gridlocked at 2-2 until Garrick's big blast in the top of the eighth.
The Stags hit the road this week with away games against Cane Bay, Colleton County and Brookland Cayce. First pitch is at 7 p.m. against the Cobras and 6:30 p.m. against Colleton County and Brookland Cayce.
