The Cross Lady Trojans historic basketball season came to an end on Valentine’s Day. CHS fell to Hemingway 44-17 in the second round of the Class A playoffs.
The Lady Trojans reached the second round of the playoffs following a convincing 42-28 win over Bethune-Bowman in the first round behind Marchaeya Gilliard’s 14 points.
Cross was able to host its first playoff games in several years by virtue of a 10-1 Region 6A record and Region 6A Championship, the first in 32 years.
On their way to the Region Championship, the Lady Trojans downed tough rivals St. John’s 41-39 and Baptist Hill 43-32 to claim the title.
Shanyra Lisbon had 15 points and Zelphair Grant 13 points to lead the Lady Trojans in the title-clinching win.
In Cross’ 41-39 nail biter against St. John’s, Lisbon canned 18 points to lead all scorers, and Jayla Ravenell added 11 points to pace the Lady Trojans.
Cross came from behind with a 23-10 fourth quarter run to erase an 11-point deficit and pull out the win.
In the second round loss to Hemingway it came down to too much size and an impenetrable zone defense by the Lady Tigers.
Hemingway jumped out to an early, 11-1 first quarter lead before Grant sank a free-throw at the four minute mark of the quarter.
In the second quarter Cross would find the bottom of the bucket behind baskets by Lisbon, Jenezia Hall and Jayla Ravenell and a free-throw by Gilliard to trail 19-8 at the half.
In the second half the Lady Trojans rallied to cut the Lady Tigers’ lead to 11 points but a 17-point fourth quarter by Hemingway put the game away. Gilliard, Ravenell and Grant each had four points to lead Cross, with Lisbon chipping in three points.
The Lady Trojans finish the season with a 13-14 record overall and 10-1 in Region 6A play.
