Lady Trojans win first region championship in 32 years
The hanging of championship banners at Cross is becoming a habit.
The Trojans football team’s state championship banner hangs beneath the scoreboard for all to see and soon, the Lady Trojans basketball team will have a Region 6A championship banner to hang alongside it, the team’s first region title in 32 years.
Two years ago when Cross girls basketball coach Calvin Davis came to Cross from Goose Creek and the rich tradition of Lady Gators basketball, he said his first order of business was to instill some of that Lady Gators work ethic and tradition into the CHS basketball program.
Davis did just that, turning around a basketball team that at the time lacked real direction, and in two short years brought home the first girls region championship since 1981.
Davis attributes his team’s success this season to junior leadership.
“We came into the season with a tough non region schedule and we played in two major tournaments, Shootout by the Sea and The Carolina invitational,” Davis said. “By doing this it has helped us to learn and compete with anyone.
“We have learned to depend on each other.”
This region championship lineup is set for a while as the Lady Trojans start a pair of juniors in Shanrya Lisbon and Marcheaya Gilliard, one freshman in Zelphair Grant, and two eighth graders, Jayla Ravenell and Jeniza Hall.
Cross Athletic Director Shaun Wright had nothing but praise for Davis and his team.
“Coach Davis has accomplished so much with this girls’ basketball team in so short a time,” Wright said. “And this is a very, very young team. No seniors. They get everybody back and will have all but two coming back next year.”
Principal Adrian Busch, who enjoyed several sports accomplishments including the football championship in his first year at CHS, sees no reason why there won’t be more of the same during his second year.
“We’re young across the board,” he said. “And I see no reason why we can’t do this again next year. We have a very strong team coming back in football next year and everybody coming back on the girls’ basketball team. I expect to see us hang a couple more championship banners on the walls in the future.”
The Region 6A Champion Lady Trojans are Lisbon, Gilliard, J’annie President, Jenazia Hall, Jayla Ravenell, Allysha Wigfall, Brianna Steed, De’ssare Thompson, Zelphair Grant, Carde’Ja Ferguson, Shardaiasha McCray, Dalias Ravenell, and Khneisha Spann.
