It's time to put on your poodle skirt and slick down your hair. The Wando High School Fine Arts Department will be presenting the iconic musical “Grease” from Feb. 14 -17. This is one of Wando's biggest productions to date, with a cast of more than 50 students. With production numbers from local choreographer Kim Chesley-Breland and larger than life automated scenery created by Wando's award-winning theatre and engineering departments, this is a must-see event.
“Grease” takes people back to the good ol' days of the 1950s. With book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, “Grease” centers on the budding high school relationship of Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski which began with a summer fling. When Danny finds out Sandy will be attending his high school, he pretends their summer romance didn't exist so he doesn't look “uncool” in front of his gang of Greasers. The show features the hit songs “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightnin',” “You're the One That I Want” and many other tunes inspired by the doo-wop music of the '50s.
Wando High School promises that this year's production is going to be an all-out spectacle with some added Wando flair. “Everyone knows the songs and story of “Grease,” but there are several musical treats in the live show that are not part of the movie,” said director Lori Carroll. “We have a large and talented cast that definitely makes this one worth watching.”
“It's been great putting our own little twist on a classic,” added lead Nathan Glyder (Danny Zuko).
Teenagers will be laughing out loud when they see “Grease,” because it is guaranteed to be funny. “'Grease' is one of those stories that's a hilarious classic. Teens will find it easy to relate to the characters, whether it be a bad hair day or having to suffer through a high school crush,” senior Grace Goldston (Sandy Dumbrowski) said.
This year, the theatre students will take their show on the road. As her drama senior thesis project, Wando senior Anne Singer (Betty Rizzo) has arranged for several characters from the musical to go to the Medical University of South Carolina's Children's Hospital for a performance. She thought this would give the children an entertaining introduction to theatre and bring service experience to Wando students.
“Grease” runs Thursday, Feb. 14 through Saturday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m., with a matinee at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17. Tickets go on sale the week of the show; please call 375-3537 or go to wandotheatreboosters.com for box office hours and purchasing information. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults. All seats are general admission. This show is recommended for ages 8 and up. The Wando High School Performing Arts Center is located in Wando High School at 1000 Warrior Way in Mount Pleasant.
