Wando School Improvement Council prepares for annual job fair

On Feb. 21, Wando High School juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to meet with more than 30 potential employers at the school’s twelfth annual Job Fair.
“We realize the job market is very competitive,” explains Associate Principal, Bryan Hearn. Hosting a job fair puts our students in contact with a variety of both summer and permanent employers. However, our goal goes beyond that. We want our students prepared and confident when they meet prospective employers.” To that end, upcoming Advisement classes will include instruction on writing a resume and tips on interviewing effectively. Students can take advantage of resume and interview workshops offered on Feb. 19 and 20 in Wando’s Palmetto Room. Representatives from GAP, the College of Charleston Career Center, Wild Dunes Resort and the Daniel Island Club have volunteered their time to conduct mock interviews and help students develop or polish their resumes.
According to Debbie Compton, who has coordinated Wando’s Job Fair the last two years, “Success stories abound. It is rewarding to see apprehensive, but determined students at the workshops transform into well-dressed, confident employment-seekers at the Job Fair.” Businesses from last year’s fair were pleased with the increase in student traffic and preparedness. “We’ll definitely be back,” says Alexa Gibbons, recruitment specialist for Wild Dunes Resort. “The Wando students we hired after last year’s Job Fair were a great addition to our summer staff. A few students continued to work on the resort during the off season.”
The Job Fair will be held Feb. 21, from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. in the Wando High School gym. Businesses wanting to secure a table should contact Debbie Compton at 843-906-5209 or debbie@oldsouthcarriage.com. Space is limited by the capacity of the gym, so registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no registration fee, and Chick-Fil-A is donating lunch for participating businesses.
