Twenty-nine county athletes sign with colleges
For high school student athletes, Feb. 6 is their Christmas morning.
On National Signing Day 2013, 29 Berkeley County athletes inked national letters of intent to take their games to the next level during a ceremony at Berkeley High School.
In recent years, the annual ceremony has been moved from the school district's meeting room to the larger BHS auditorium in order to accommodate the families and friends of the large number of county athletes signing scholarships.
“All of the hard work, dedication and commitment in the field and in the classroom pays off for the student athlete in today's reward,” Berkeley County School District Director of Athletics Charlie Davis said.
BCSD Superintendent Rodney Thompson challenged this year's crop of student athletes to become role models for the younger athletes.
“The eyes of the world are on you now,” he said. “Your success does not come without responsibility. The world and the other 31,000 students in Berkeley County will be watching.”
Thompson reminded the audience of the nine different state championships won by county schools over the last two years.
“We have the best coaches in the state here in Berkeley County,” he said. “Success is an easy answer from the high expectations we have from the classroom to the playing field, first in academics and then athletics.
“Today is a special day anytime we can honor our young people and we do that a lot here in Berkeley County.”
In addition to Berkeley and Timberland, Goose Creek signed 11 players to scholarships, Cane Bay followed with five, Stratford four, and Hanahan three.
Davis said to expect more scholarship signings as the spring sports season begins.
“We had a pair of scholarship signings just two hours before this ceremony began,” Davis said. “And we expect more to follow on through the end of the current school year. We celebrate and honor the accomplishments of each student athlete here today and those who sign in the coming weeks and months.”
