Life goes on
The election is long gone, but the strife is still present.
However, at times, it is not as bad as before. After a while the acting, profiling and other theatrics of politicians wears thin and the news media moves on looking for some other kind of action that will catch the public’s attention.
Unfortunately what they find newsworthy is not synonymous with what is good. But everyday people like you and me have to go on with our lives no matter what is happening on the national or local scene.
Life goes on. We have to find ways to take care of ourselves, our families and loved ones, reach out to our neighbors and deal with our many personal challenges and struggles. No matter what is happening and where it is happening, we will always have our struggles.
So how do we do it?
Here are two things we need to remember.
Keep your eyes on what is most important in your life. A lot of things sometimes happen around us. There are all kinds of things that can distract us, but we cannot lose sight of what is most important in our lives.
Family, friends and neighbors. These people know our names. When we are sick they visit us. When we are in trouble or going through difficult times they encourage us and strengthen us. They ask about our children. They listen to our stories. These are the people who care about us.
Let us never lose sight of the most important things in our lives. Some people can’t see the trees for the forest. They miss what’s important because they are so caught up with everything else that is going on around them.
The next thing we need to remember is to be there for each other. Let us practice neighborliness the way I often hear people talk about the way it was during the good old days.
Good deeds never go out of style. Helping people is always a good thing. There is the old saying, “Today for me, tomorrow for you.” In other words I might need help today but tomorrow you might be the one in need. Need is not always defined in monetary terms although that’s the emphasis today, but needs exist in people’s lives in many ways.
There are a number of things we might not have. There are a number of things we have no control over. But we have control over how we treat each other, take care of each other, and look out for each other. These things don’t have to go out of style; but in the long run, whether they do or not is up to us.
