Coastal Christiam Prep to compete in Stingray Bowl

Local high school scholars are planning to compete in the Southern Stingray Bowl

Regional Ocean Science Competition as part of the annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl.

WHO: Students and teachers from high schools in Georgia and South Carolina with a strong interest in ─ and knowledge of ─ marine science. Confirmed High Schools that will compete in the Southern Stingray Bowl include Coastal Christian Preparatory School.

WHAT: Sixteen high school teams consisting of four or five students compete in the Southern Stingray Bowl, an annual, regional ocean science competition. The teams are tested through quick answer buzzer questions and thought-provoking team challenge questions. The Southern Stingray Bowl is hosted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center and the Marines Science program at Savannah State University, the only Historically Black College/University to host a National Ocean Sciences Bowl Competition. The winning team of this bowl will compete against 24 other regional champions in the 16th annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on April 18-21 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

WHEN: Feb. 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHERE: Savannah State University; Social Sciences Building

WHY: The Southern Stingray Bowl is part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB), which is a program of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership based in Washington, D.C. Through this educational forum, the NOSB strives to encourage and support the next generation of marine scientists, policy makers, teachers, explorers, researchers, technicians, environmental advocates and informed citizens, to be stewards of the ocean. Many past NOSB participants have moved on to pursue college degrees and careers in ocean science. In 2013, approximately 2,000 students from more than 300 high schools will participate.
