Seniors encouraged to apply for State Fair scholarship

The South Carolina State Fair, an independent, non-profit organization, is now taking applications for its 2013 Ride of Your Life Scholarship Program.
This year, the State Fair will again award $300,000 in scholarships to 50 high school seniors from across the state who will be attending an in-state school or university. The students will receive $6,000 each, in $1,500 increments for up to four years.
“The citizens of South Carolina really came out and embraced the fair in 2012,” said the fair’s general manager, Gary Goodman. “We had nearly half a million attendees, including people from every county in the state.
“This success allows us to continue our tradition of giving back to the community by awarding these scholarships to deserving students.”
The State Fair has provided this kind of educational assistance to South Carolina high school students for 16 years. What began with 10 students in 1997 has grown into one of the largest independently funded scholarship programs in the state, all made possible through admissions, ride tickets and food sales during the 12 days of the fair.
“It is very gratifying to be part of an organization that supports 200 of our state’s best students every year,” said Goodman. “In some cases, the Ride of Your Life Scholarship Program has helped break a cycle of poverty, allowing students to be the first in their families to attend college.”
All high school seniors in South Carolina are eligible to apply to be State Fair Scholars. Prospective scholars will be judged on overall performance and involvement, need, communications skills and ability to complete the application process.
Applications can be found at scstatefair.org/scholarships.
Fully completed applications must be postmarked by March 15, and successful applicants will be notified in early May.
For more information on the South Carolina State Fair Ride of Your Life Scholarship Program, contact Betsy Cooper at (803) 799- 3387, ext. 10 or betsyc@scstatefair.org.
