County principal arrested, on leave

A Berkeley County principal is on leave from his job and faces a criminal domestic violence charge.
Shortly after 3 a.m. on Dec. 30 Hanahan Police received a call about an alleged incident at an apartment complex off Remount Road.
Police found the suspect, Sedgefield Intermediate Principal Clarence Hawkins, driving in his vehicle, and pulled him over at the intersection of Remount Road and Rivers Avenue, according to a HPD incident report.
A female told police that Hawkins, who she said was her recent ex-boyfriend, came to her apartment that night and knocked on her door.
She opened the blinds, recognized Hawkins, and opened the door. She asked what he was doing at her apartment at 3 a.m. Hawkins told her that he wanted his watch back, but she told Hawkins she did not have the watch, according to the report.
That’s when Hawkins allegedly pushed open the door, shoved her in the chest, called her a choice word and proceeded into her apartment, according to the report. The victim said she started yelling for someone to call police.
After the victim called police Hawkins left the residence and left in his vehicle, the report said. He was pulled over and transported to the detention center on a charge of criminal domestic violence, according to the report.
Police noticed the contents of the victim’s purse strewn about her floor. The victim said she did not want EMS treatment, but noted her chest was sore and she was shaken up, the report said.
The Berkeley County School District released the following statement: “As soon as the district learned of the alleged incident – reported off of school grounds and not during school hours – and in compliance with district policy, the employee was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
“Please note that we may not disclose other specifics about the employee’s employment as investigations regarding personnel matters are protected by privacy rights.
“Mr. Hawkins was not at school on the work day for employees on Jan. 2 and was placed on administrative leave on Thursday, Jan. 3.”
