The St. John’s Cavaliers marched through January like Sherman on his way to the sea, taking a perfect 9-0 region record into the regular season’s final weeks with wins over James Island Christian (62-43), Ridge Christian (91-40) and Coastal Christian (65-50).
The wins leave the Cavaliers poised to nail down a top seed as the SCISA state playoffs draw near.
In SJCA’s win over James Island Christian the Cavs put together four consistent quarters of play as Mike Lewis and his 17 points led four players in double figures. Damian Hurta chipped in 15 points, Bobby Winters added 11 and Greg Gamble 10 points in the win.
Gamble also continued his domination in the paint by pulling down 13 rebounds, blocking six shots and dishing out five assists.
The win improves St. John’s to 16-4 and 9-0 in region play.
“We had four wins this past week and were never challenged,” said SJCA Coach Bob Winters. “That will change Tuesday at Faith Christian as we will need a win there to finish the season undefeated in our Region.”
Winters said the team decided early in the year to set a goal of a 20-win regular season. With five games remaining in the regular season it looks like the Cavaliers may hit their mark. “We haven't been challenged for a while now, not since the Ashtree game, and Tuesday night at Faith will be a showdown,” Winters said.
SJCA downed Faith Christian 56-27 on Jan. 4 but Tuesday’s game will be a different story according to Winters. “We beat them here at home but they were without their big guy, Josh Nelson at 6’7”. We will need to play well to win.”
Against a developing Ridge Christian team the Cavs rode a 39-6 first quarter lead to an easy 91-40 win.
Lewis led all scorers with 22 points. Britt Pipkin chipped in 16 points off the bench along with Gamble and Hurta knocking down 16 as well.
Against Coastal Christian, SJCA jumped out to a 12-2 first quarter lead and never looked back. Lewis again led all scorers with 23 points. Winters added 13.
The Cavaliers finish out the regular season with four games in seven days, traveling to Faith Christian on Tuesday, and hosting Charleston Math and Science in a non-region game on Thursday.
SJCA wraps up the region schedule against Trident Academy on Friday and with back-to-back home games on Feb. 4 (non-region) against Branchville and Feb. 5 against Cathedral.
