After asking teachers, administrators and various stakeholders for feedback, the Berkeley County School Board approved the first of two readings of the 2013 – 2014 school calendar at its regularly scheduled Jan. 22 meeting in Moncks Corner.
Barring changes, school is set to start Aug. 19, winter break is set for Dec. 23 – Jan. 6, spring break for April 14 – 22, 2014, and the last day is May 30, 2014.
The board is expecting to approve and pass the second and final reading at its Feb. 12 meeting, Berkeley County School District Public Information Officer Susan Haire said.
The board is not expected to make changes for the second reading, but changes are always a possibility.
Haire said the district is asking all principals to take the two versions of their draft calendar to their school community so they can get feedback from their staff.
“That was reported back to the board,” Haire said. “We also got feedback from the Teacher Forum.”
The main differences in the two drafts is varying dates for teacher workdays and therefore varying days that classes resume.
The draft aligns itself as closely as possible with neighboring Dorchester Districts 2 and 4 and Charleston County schools for start and end dates plus winter and spring break dates.
