An upcoming Winter Fossil Show will usher in a new year of exciting, family-friendly events at Cypress Gardens.
Cypress Gardens showcases a vast array of local fossils at this popular annual event, set for 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. Coastal South Carolina’s lively prehistoric past attracts both amateur collectors and paleontologist alike.
“A number of quite impressive marine and terrestrial fossils have been discovered in the Lowcountry,” Cypress Gardens Director Dwight Williams said. “Shark teeth, whale, mammoth, primitive horse fossils, and shellfish are some of the most common finds.
“In recent years, there have even been some dinosaur fossils found in the state.”
Local fossils and even some exotic fossil material will be on display to view and explore. Guests are encouraged to bring their finds and have them analyzed by experts, who will be available to help with identification.
Children can participate in a fossil dig, and door prizes will be awarded every hour.
Lunch will be available for purchase.
The show is free with regular paid admission to Cypress Gardens ($10 adult, $9 senior, $5 child 6 to 12 years of age). Berkeley County residents will be admitted free from 9 a.m. until 12 Noon with a photo ID.
Local Edge is the event’s sponsor.
