Man dies during apparent mower theft

 A Summerville man died earlier this month after apparently attempting to steal a lawn mower from a Berkeley County residence.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Holly Court and East Lakeside Drive in Hanahan.
Just before 5 a.m. on Jan. 8 police received a call from a man delivering newspapers who saw a man stuck under a lawn mower, according to a Hanahan Police Department incident report.
The newspaper deliveryman said he called out to the subject, who was unresponsive.
When police arrived it appeared the subject was stuck under a red Snapper 28-inch riding mower, valued at $500, that was on two large pieces of wood being used as a ramp at the rear of a 1999 Ford F-150, according to the report.
Upon closer inspection officers found the white male was not trapped under the mower, but was unresponsive. Upon arrival EMS declared the subject – Robert Eugene Catching, 55 – deceased, according to the report.
A deputy coroner arrived, conducted an investigation of the body and determined there was no initial evidence of foul play.
Police contacted the owner of the lawnmower, a Holly Court man, who positively identified the mower as his and had it returned. The report classified the incident as petit larceny, under $2,000.
