Stags earn split in first week of region play

The Berkeley Stags erupted for 42 first half points and cruised to a 67-57 win over Hanahan in the opening week of Region 8AAA action.
With the win, Berkeley earned a split in the first week of the region schedule, narrowly losing 50-47 to Hilton Head on Jan. 8.
Against the Hawks, three players scored in double figures for the Stags. D'Andre Richardson and Diamonte Harley tallied 13 points each to lead Berkeley, while Ormaine Thomas chipped in 11 points.
The Stags jumped out to an 18-12 first quarter lead over the Hawks but it was the 24-point second quarter that blew the game open with Berkeley taking an 18-point lead into the locker room.
BHS coasted in the second half and won the game down the stretch at the free throw line, shooting 18 out of 21 free throw attempts.
For Coach Joe Wallace, this is the part of the season his team has been waiting for: “We are looking forward to the second part of our season. Four out of our five region opponents are new this year.”
The Sea Hawks are the lone holdover from last year’s region schedule and held off a furious Berkeley comeback to win by three at home.
Down by 11 at the end of the first half the Stags rallied in the third quarter to tie the score at 36-36 and in the fourth quarter and briefly took a 43-42 lead with six minutes remaining in the game.
But the Sea Hawks held off the Berkeley rally in the game’s waning minutes with a pair of tip ins underneath by Hilton Head’s James Sanders.
Richardson and Tairi Major each had 10 points to lead the Stags. Thomas added nine and Harley seven in the Region 8AAA opener against the 9-6 Sea Hawks.
“We have to try to steal wins on the road and hold serve at home,” Wallace said. “We definitely had our work cut out for us against a good Hilton Head team and then hit the road again at Hanahan.”
The Stags, 5-8 overall and 1-1 in Region 8AAA host a pair of big region games this week against James Island on Tuesday and against early region favorite Orangeburg Wilkinson on Friday.
