After a 92-31 win over Trident Academy, St. John's hit a brick wall, falling 55-35 against Christian Academy in a Saturday afternoon game in Myrtle Beach.
“We ran into a defensive buzz saw,” said Cavaliers Coach Bob Winters. “We were able to stay close for about 20 minutes but couldn't find the basket late in the game.”
Buzz saw is right. After the two teams traded buckets and Christian Academy took a 27-22 lead into the half, the Cavaliers went cold and mustered just 13 second-half points.
“We had 27 turnovers and that is almost impossible to overcome,” Winters said.
Damian Hurta was the only Cavalier to break double figures, scoring 13 points as SJCA fell to 11-4 on the season.
In the win over Trident Academy, Mike Lewis poured in 26 points in the win. Greg Gamble chipped in 23 points and Hurta added 18 points.
The Cavs jumped out to a 28-4 first quarter lead and for good measure matched that with a 49-13 second half in the blowout win.
Winters said there's still a lot of regular season remaining but the playoffs quickly approach.
“We look forward to ending the season on another winning streak going into the region tournament,” he said. “If everything goes the way it should we are looking at playing 16 more games, including a deep run in the state tournament.”
The Jan. 11 game with Cathedral was postponed and will be played on Jan. 24. The Cavaliers play at Coastal Christian Prep on Friday.
