School board holds first meeting of 2013

The Berkeley County School Board met for the first time this year on Jan. 8 for its regularly scheduled twice-monthly meeting.
Here are some highlights from the session, held at the district office in Moncks Corner.
• Berkeley High School’s STAR Academy was recognized for receiving the nation 2012 Crystal Star Award of Excellence in “dropout recovery, intervention and prevention” from the National Dropout Prevention Network.• Goose Creek High School wrestling coach Leonard Covington was recognized for his ongoing commitment to students and recently earning his 400th wrestling match win as coach. Covington is among the top five winning coaches in the state.• Chief Academic Officer Kevin O’Gorman provided an update concerning instructional coaching. Associate Superintendent of Human Resources Glenda Levine and Executive Director Jerome Davis shared a presentation on teacher recruitment and support.The board passed an exemption to the procurement code and a resolution to authorize the issuance and sale of the general obligation bonds as the next step in the passage of the school improvement referendum, which Berkeley County voters passed with nearly 60 percent of the vote in November.• During executive session the board discussed student expulsion appeals, personnel considerations, contractual matter and received a legal briefing.From Superintendent Rodney Thompson’s report:
• Thompson recently attended a meeting with local law enforcement regarding school safety. The district’s next step is to audit each school’s existing safeguards to additional support can be provided in an efficient manner.
• Hanahan Middle School is one of two state finalists for the middle school Palmetto’s Finest award. Marrington Middle School of the Arts is also a finalist for the award in the special schools division.
