The awards and accolades continue to flow for the Class A, Div. II state champion Cross Trojans.
Coach Shaun Wright was named Class A, Div. II Coach of the Year and six members of his team were named to the SC Coach’s Association All-State team.
Named to the All-State Team were Branford Halls, Devantae Shepherd, Dionte Evans, Malik Gooding, Olin Pinckney and Diamonte Evans. Shepherd was also named Offensive Player of the Year.
“We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of these players,” Wright said. “The hard work, dedication, and the willing to be great teammates are some of the reasons why these guys are recognized as All State. These guys put in the hard work and they brought their lunch pail with them every Friday.”
Cross captured the state championship with a convincing 38-26 win over McCormick on Nov. 23 at Benedict College in Columbia.
Shepherd rushed for 166 and 3 touchdowns in the win. For the season the junior running back rushed for 1289 yards and 20 touchdowns.
“What makes this extra special is that he just received his ACT scores and he has done extremely well,” Wright said. “He is a full qualifier and we should see his recruiting take off.”
Wright also expects the Evans brothers Dionte and Diamonte to be heavily recruited as well.
Dionte Evans scored 3 touchdowns as well in the state championship win and rushed for 1066 yards on the season. Twin brother Diamonte Evans rushed for 786 yards on the season.
“This Junior class could be special,” Wright said.
On his Coach of the Year Award Wright said the award was a testament to the hard work put in by his players over the course of the season.
“As a coaching staff we are very proud and these guys deserve all the accolades they are receiving,” he said. “We just thank God for He is allowing us to see the fruits of our labor.”
