Wolves devour Stags in rematch

  • Monday, January 14, 2013

The last time these two teams hooked up Timberland’s Austin McKinney was playing football in the Shrine Bowl. Berkeley won that Dec. 14 meeting 46-41.
This time not only was McKinney in attendance, he started, which ordinarily the senior guard prefers not to do.
Spurred by 12-0 run in a 23-point first quarter, of which McKinney scored 14, the Timberland Wolves earned a measure of revenge, blowing out the Stags 67-45 before a packed THS house Saturday.
McKinney scored the first four THS points, and after a Dee Harley 3-pointer gave the Stags their only lead of the night at 8-7, McKinney answered with his own long distance trey and the rout was on.
Joel Palmer put the Wolves up with a layup 10-8 and then McKinney took over, hitting buckets from 18-feet, a layup off a steal and a 3-pointer from the wing to put THS up 19-8 and take a 31-21 halftime lead.
The Stags would fade in the second half and draw no closer as the Wolves led by as many as 25 points before THS Coach Jerome Stewart pulled his starters midway through the fourth quarter.
McKinney finished with 22 points on the night to lead all scorers and one of three Wolves to tally in double figures. Palmer chipped in 14 points, 12 coming in the second half. Shamell Williams added 13 points.
Tairi Major led Berkeley with 11 points. Dee Harley chipped in eight.
The win improves Timberland to 6-5 while the Stags fall to 4-7.
In Timberland’s 51-47 win over Stratford, Palmer led the Wolves with 16 points while Deandre Watson added 11.
Berkeley hits the road, traveling to Hilton Head and Hanahan this week to tip off its Region 8AAA schedule while the Wolves head to Kingstree to start their Region 7AA schedule before returning home on Friday to host Lake City.
