Police investigators are trying to identify a man they say broke into a gun display case in Wal Mart and stole two AK-47 style rifles.
According to a Summerville Police Department incident report, the theft occurred about 3:35 a.m. Thursday in the Wal Mart on North Main Street in Summerville. According to the report, the loss prevention officer at the store reported finding the case broken into with a hammer and chisel stolen from the hardware section of the store.
The subject was described as a black male about 5 feet eleven inches tall and 180 pounds, about 20-30 years old, wearing khaki pants and a camouflage jacket. The subject was observed running toward U.S. 17 A. with at least one stolen rifle.
Further investigation revealed two rifles, a Bushmaster Patrolman’s Carbine .223 caliber rifle and a Smith and Wesson .22 caliber rifle, as well as a box of 20 gauge shotgun shells were missing from the case.
Officer arriving on the scene canvassed the area and while they were unable to locate a suspect, they did recover the rifles in a patch of pampas grass near the Quality Inn adjacent to the I-26 exit ramp.
