The Moncks Corner Pitching Machine All-Star team was recognized during the July meeting of Moncks Corner Town Council. The team won its district tournament to advance to the state tournament in just their second year of All-Star level play.
Butch Watson, Berkeley Hall of Fame Class of 2013 and an assistant All-Star coach, thanked the town for outstanding support. “It’s great to see these young people do so well and the support shown by the town was fantastic,” he said.
Ralph Jones, Park and Rec Director said the crowd support was strong.
“We had a great following on the road,” he said. “The support from Moncks Corner was amazing. This is just the second year of machine pitch baseball at the All-Star level for us and we are really pleased with their performance. Not many teams from Moncks Corner make it to the state tournament.”
Jones cited travel ball as a challenge for the All-Star teams.
“Travel ball has really affected the post season and the All Stars,” Jones said. “Players will finish the regular season and then leave for travel ball and pass on playing All-Stars, especially in softball.”
Other Park and Rec programs combine their All-Stars and travel ball either via the placement of travel ball players throughout the league or waiting until after All-Star play has completed before beginning summer travel ball season.
“How can you not represent your hometown in All-Stars?” Jones asked.
The players who remained dedicated to the Park and Rec league’s All Star teams hold a special place in Jones’ eyes. “These players choose to represent their hometown and there is a great deal of pride in that,” he said.
“I’ve been to other recreation complex sites similar to what we’ll have and see the tournaments playing there. The crowds are packed there. Those crowds will soon come here as well.”
