Tony Owens, MD

Dr. Tony Owens recently returned to Ladson to open Carolina Pain Physicians not far from the College Park home where he grew up and his parents still live.  A graduate of Stratford High School, Charleston Southern University and the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Owens was happy to come back with his wife and three young children to the Lowcountry, where he sees a local need for a pain physician who can see patients quickly. Dr. Owens chose to specialize in pain management after a personal injury during his residency. “I lifted weights and ruptured three discs in my back. I was in excruciating pain.” He worried that he would need surgery, but received relief within a couple of weeks from two epidural steroid injections, which delivered a powerful anti-inflammatory near his spinal cord, along with continued use of the non-narcotic medicine Lyrica. Now, he strives to determine the underlying cause of each patient's pain and tailor a treatment plan accordingly. Tools may include medication, spinal cord stimulation and interventional techniques such as radiofrequency ablation, which uses heat to disrupt the transmission of pain signals from nerves to the brain.
“It's really rewarding to take folks through the process of pain management and relief.  Patients are extremely grateful.”
