Stags finish third in Region 8-AAA meet

Marissa Pinckney, Jonnay Anthony and Ezequial Jenkins brought home multiple region championships for the Berkeley Stags track teams at the Region 8AAA at Bonner Stadium on April 24.
Pinckney won region titles in the 4x100 relay, the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, Anthony took home region crowns in the 4x100 relay and the 400-meter hurdles, and Jenkins took titles in the high jump and a member of the 4x100 relay.
The boys finished third in the region meet behind Hilton Head and Hanahan where the girls placed third behind James Island and Hanahan.
The Berkeley boys’ track team crowned region champions in the 4x100 relay team, the 110-meter hurdles, the triple long jump and the high jump in finishing third. The girls took home region titles in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races, and the 4x100 relay.
In addition to Jenkins’ pair of region titles, the boys crowned region champs in the 4x100 relay team of Rashad Simmons, Jenkins, Josh Sellars and Ezequiel Sepulvada with a time of 43.07 seconds, Leon Ravenell in the 110-meter hurdles, Dee Harley in the triple long jump, and Jenkins again in the high jump.
The Stags qualified 12 athletes and teams for the Lower State qualifier meet.
Girls region champs were Marissa Pinckney in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, Anthony Jonnay in the 400-meter hurdles, and the 4x100 relay team of Jonnay, Pinckney, Donni Robinson and Ashlynn Smalls.
The Lady Stags also qualified a total of 12 athletes and teams for the Lower State qualifier meet.
“We ran some decent races and placed well in several events with many of our athletes qualifying with personal bests,” said Stags boys Coach Greg Christensen. “It’s all about moving on to the next level.”
The Class AAA qualifier is this Saturday at Lower Richland High School in Hopkins.
