Youth Night a hit

Dan Brown/Independent -- Recreation softball players are introduced with the Lady Stags as Berkeley takes the field against Orangeburg-Wilkinson. --

Moncks Corner Parks and Recreation celebrated its first Baseball and Softball Youth Night with area players taking part in pregame ceremonies at Berkeley’s games with Orangeburg-Wilkinson last week.
“It was really a spur of the moment thing,” said Park and Recreation Director Ralph Jones. “For putting it together on such a short notice we had a great turnout.”
Berkeley Coach Landy Cox and the baseball Stags were honoring the Berkeley Stags’ 1960 and 1963 Class A District and Lower State Championship baseball teams before the game, and Cox thought bringing possible future Stags onto the field with the greats of the past would add a nice touch to the ceremony.
“This was a chance to honor those great teams of Berkeley’s past and at the same time introduce them to present and future Berkeley baseball players,” Cox said.
Jones said he’d like to see the springtime Youth Night take on the same scope as the Youth Night celebrated in the fall at BHS football games.
“Next year we want to really do this up nice,” he said. “We get the kids out here and cook hot dogs and let them tour the facility so they can see what the future holds for them here at Berkeley. Most all of the current Berkeley Stags got their start in our Park and Recreation leagues.
“This gives them something to aspire to as they move through the program.”
More than 40 baseball and softball players joined the Stags and Lady Stags at their positions on the field prior to the start of the games.
“This was a really nice touch,” said Lady Stags Coach Boogie Grooms. “It gives these players something to look forward to as they get older.”
