The Ashley Ridge boys’ soccer team won a penalty kick shootout with Summerville Tuesday to claim a 1-0 victory over its cross-town rival.
Swamp Fox goal keeper Stockton Blanchard received the shutout in goal after defending two out of four Summerville PKs during the shootout while his teammates made four out of their five PKs. Cole Edwards, Jake Kreider and Michael Sauter all put shots into the net to set up the game-winning kick by junior Quincy D’Antonio. Bailey Shelbourne and David Kennedy hit PKs for Summerville.
It was the first region win for the Swamp Foxes (5-6-1, 1-3 in Region 8-AAAA) and the first region loss for the Green Wave (5-4-1, 2-1).
“At times we looked sloppy tonight but at others we looked right on and I think that has to do with our age,” Ashley Ridge coach Nate Harris said. “We are very young so in a way we are kind of starting over, but the potential is there. I feel bad for what these kids have been through the last few games. We have a great group and they can get the job done because we have been in all our region games this year. We just need to tighten up our play some.”
The teams spent most of the first half feeling each other out, but both had some good scoring opportunities in the second half.
Only three minutes into the half Summerville’s Mitchell Cook sent a shot into the left goal post. Ryan West gained possession after the ball deflected off the post and got off another shot, but it was wide right.
Anson Girone broke free later in the half and only had Summerville keeper Ashton Tanner between him and the goal, but his shot was just off its mark.
In the 61st minute Summerville’s Madison Socha and David Kennedy worked the ball into the Ashley Ridge box but the Swamp Foxes defended the shot. Just more than a minute later, Shelbourne took a shot that sailed just high.
In stoppage time for regulation, Girone passed to Swamp Fox midfielder Britt Soyebo and he sent a nice header toward the goal but Tanner made the save.
Summerville had the best chance to score in overtime. West passed to Brandon Cook in the final 30 seconds of the first overtime period and Cook got off the shot but it was just off its mark.
The Swamp Foxes hit the road April 4 to face Chattahoochee and then return home April 9 to host a region match with Bluffton. Summerville travels to Colleton County April 9 and hosts Beaufort April 12.
