Dan Brown/Independent -- Blake Ponder fires to first as Brooklyn Stone watches. --

With a 7-2 overall mark, Berkeley emerged from the first week of Region 7AAA softball play with a 3-0 mark with wins over James Island, Hanahan and Stall.
These Lady Stags are in command of their own destiny.
Against James Island Berkeley put three runs on the board in the first and made them stand to down the Lady Trojans 4-3 on March 18.
In the first with one-out, Ashtin Kullnat walked and advanced on Brooklyn Stone’s single to left. R.J. Reid followed with a bases clearing double to plate both Kullnat and Stone to put Berkeley on top 3-0.
In the third after James Island answered with a single run in the top half of the inning, Kullnat reached after being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Stone’s second hit of the night. Kullnat scored on Blake Ponder’s pop out to short.
Stone scattered six hits en route to the win and struck out five.
In the 6-3 win over Hanahan, it was more of the same for the Lady Stags, this time a five-run third inning that saw Berkeley hit around accounted for the damage.
Kelston Hilton led off with a walk, advanced on Ponder’s single, and scored on Kullnat’s RBI base knock. Ponder scored when Stone’s fly ball to center was misplayed for an error. Reid’s RBI base hit scored Kullnat and Peyton Svagerko’s sacrifice fly to center tallied the final run of the inning.
In the sixth Berkeley plated an insurance run. Annabelle Stevens singled up the middle and scored on Stone’s base hit, her second RBI of the game.
Stone scattered seven hits and struck out six to earn the complete game win.
Region action continues for the Lady Stags this week against Orangeburg-Wilkinson and Hilton Head, and on Friday a non-region tilt against Timberland.
