Two students from Christ Our King-Stella Maris School competed recently in the Southern Region Gathering (qualifying event for the Irish Dance Championship) held Nov. 30-Dec. 2, 2012 in New Orleans. Fifth-grader-Addie Bachrodt was representing Drake School of Irish Dance and third grader McKenna Young represented Glor Na Daire Academy of Irish Dance.
Bachrodt competed against dancers in her age group (under 10) from 15 states in the southern region U.S. She placed ninth and qualified for Nationals, which will be held in Los Angeles, Calif., and Worlds, which is slated for Boston, Mass. later this year. She dances with the Drake School of Irish Dance which is based out of Atlanta but is also opening a school here in Charleston this month.
Though it was Young’s first experience dancing at this level and she is the youngest dancer to ever represent Charleston at this event, she danced admirably and was a big part of her team’s success. Not yet old enough to qualify for the World Championships, Young is being considered for inclusion in her team’s National Championship team. She has a promising future in Irish dance with Glor na Daire and with her hard work and dedication, she will continue as a rising star in the program.
