The idea was a good one, but a long time in coming: a joining of three public services, Trident United Way, Goodwill and Family Services Inc. to offer those in need throughout Berkeley County and the Lowcountry a central place to come for social services.
The Prosperity Center opened its doors last week in downtown Moncks Corner, and offers the services of United Way, Goodwill and Family Services under one roof.
Chris Kerrigan is the CEO of Trident United Way.
“The more hands involved the better the work gets done,” he said to a reception of local business and civic leaders last week. “The need here is so large we had to figure out a way to join together and pull all these programs under one roof. The opening of this Prosperity Center is the culmination of this collaborative effort.”
The Prosperity Center, located on Main Street next to Barron’s Department Store, is collective community impact in action.
Trident United Way will offer the Benefit Bank, income support and free tax preparation services. Family Services Inc. will provide financial education counseling, credit counseling and foreclosure prevention and assistance. Goodwill offers adult education, Work Keys certification and employment training.
David Geer, CEO of Family Services Inc., said the opening of the new Prosperity represents an exciting time for his organization. “We hit the ground … it’s working and we’re running,” he said, “And we are all very excited about the new ways we can be of service to the area.”
Goodwill CEO Robert Smith agreed.
“This is an exciting joint venture,” he said. “Individually we do a lot of great things, but collectively we will do a lot of amazing things.”
Prosperity Center manager Tomekia Martin provided visitors guided tours of the refurbished and remodeled former United Way offices. “We’re very excited to be partnered with Goodwill and Family Services,” she said. “With everyone working together the results are that 30 percent more local residents are financially stable.”
