Keeping a set starting five has been one of those problems the Berkeley Stags have struggled with all season long.
With Ormaine Thomas sitting out against Hanahan on Jan. 29, the Stags dropped a 50-47 thriller; with Thomas back for Friday night’s tilt against James Island, Berkeley suffered through a 26-point blowout, losing 72-46 to drop into fourth place in Region 8AAA standings.
Against the Trojans the Stags mustered just seven points for the entire first half, three in the first quarter and four in the second, and were never in the game afterwards.
Alex Taylor led the Stags with 12 points while Diamonte Harley added 10.
Against Hanahan, Berkeley jumped out to a good start, going up 8-2 early, and held a 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
After Harley canned a 16-footer from the right wing to put the Stags up 12-8, the Hawks went on an 8-0 run to take a 20-16 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter the Stags got hot from long distance with treys from Harley, Rashawn Matthews and D’Andre Richardson, but were not able to cut into the Hawks’ four-point lead until a Harley three-pointer tied the game at 47-47 with 2:58 left in the game.  The Stags could not find the basket over the final three minutes of the game.
Hanahan added a late bucket and a free-throw to put the game away.
Harley had 13 points and Richardson chipped in 11 to lead Berkeley.
Mired in a three-game losing streak, the Stags have fallen from a second place tie to a fourth place tie in a little more than a week.
At 3-5, Berkeley, Hanahan and Hilton Head are locked in a three-way tie for fourth place behind region leading Orangeburg-Wilkinson at 7-2 and Stall at 5-3. The Stags were poised to travel to Orangeburg to take on the Bruins on Tuesday and host Stall on Senior Night in the regular season finale on Thursday.
