Ashley Ridge earned a convincing win over Cane Bay in the opening round of the Class AAAA girls’ tennis playoffs.
The Lady Swamp Foxes downed the Lady Cobras 5-1 Tuesday at Ashley Ridge High School. Cane Bay’s Dakota Brown won the No. 1 singles match but the rest of the evening belonged to the Swamp Foxes, which advanced to play at West Florence Thursday after press time.
Brown was impressive in her victory, but in the other matches the Swamp Foxes only lost a total of three games.
“At the end of last year we lost three of our top five players who were seniors,” Ashley Ridge coach Andy Steingold said. “Being able to advance to the second round of the playoffs is a testament to the accomplishments of the girls we pulled up from the JV. Again this year three of our top players are seniors but our younger players are also contributing.”
Ashley Ridge went 7-3 in Region 8-AAAA this season and won a tiebreaker with Bluffton to secure the No. 2 seed for the region, which was won by Beaufort. With Tuesday’s win, the Swamp Foxes improved to 9-7 overall.
This marks the second consecutive year Ashley Ridge has advanced to the second round to face West Florence, which is the top seed for its region.
Summerville earned the fourth seed for Region 8 and was eliminated from the playoffs Tuesday with a loss to Region 7 champion Wando.
