Berkeley Stags baseball seniors Cam Sessions, Bryce Baur, Brad Barwick and Thurman Pellum all inked college deals this week to continue their game on the next level.
Sessions will play for Charleston Southern, Baur will head northeast to play for Francis Marion, Barwick will suit up for Florence-Darlington Tech and Pellum will take the hill for USC Beaufort.
Before the 2009 Berkeley Stags baseball season began, if you were to talk to new coach Landy Cox about his prospects for the coming season, he could only shake his head and lament the overall lack of experience leftover from the 2008 bunch.
“We only had four or five players coming back with more than five varsity at-bats,” he said. “Wins were to come at a premium.”
Nobody bothered to copy these four seniors on the memo as the Stags jumped off to a 6-1 start and finished with a 13-10 record, which included a trip to the state playoffs.
“Our success rested on the shoulders of those four seniors,” Cox said.
Pellum led the mound staff with a 6-1 record, allowing 28 hits, 13 earned runs in 37 innings with a 2.50 ERA. Pellum walked 14 and struck out 28.
Sessions looks to split time in the infield and on the mound at CSU. At the plate Sessions hit .324 with 13 runs, three doubles, 10 stolen bases and 11 RBIs. On the mound the righthander posted a 2-3 record with a save, with 23 K’s in 29.2 innings and a 4.50 ERA.
Baur led the Stags in all hitting departments, posting a .473 average, 35 hits, 20 runs, all team highs, with three doubles and a homer.
Barwick possesses one of the strongest arms in the Lower State from behind the plate and was the field general for the Stags on defense, throwing out 14 would-be base stealers and 108 put outs.
 “It has always been my dream to play baseball at the next level,” Sessions said. “I’m not ready to be done playing yet.”
His sentiments were echoed by his three teammates.
