Last month’s six inches of snow that fell in Moncks Corner resulted in several downed trees in the area and one light pole.
The light pole in question was a baseball light pole located on the first base line of St. John’s Christian Academy’s baseball field behind the school.
According to SJCA athletic director Bob Winters, the wooden light pole standing close to 70 feet in height, unable to support the weight of the snow that collected on the netting stretched between the two light poles above the backstop, snapped off at the base and landed on the first base side dugout.
“With all the snowfall we had, the snow collected … and the weight was too much,” Winters said.
For now the Cavaliers don’t have a place to play baseball.
They hope it’s not for long.
The St. John’s JV tournament scheduled for last weekend had to be moved to the Moncks Corner Park and Recreation Youth Fields complex at Lion’s Beach.
The roof and much of the side cinderblock walls of the first base dugout were destroyed. The netting and some of the backstop behind home plate was damaged as well.
Repair work is continuing and progress is being made. The light pole and lights were replaced last Thursday.
“Our insurance covered this one for once, so we’re not out anything this time,” Winters said.
