The Berkeley Stags baseball team has gotten off to a blistering start to the 2010 season, running a perfect 6-0 and claiming the Lowcountry Preseason Invitational tournament championship.
The Stags bring a pair of young lefties, junior Tyler Barwick who already has a full season of varsity experience under his belt and freshman Drew Lockliear who made his varsity debut throwing three and two-thirds innings of hitless relief in Berkeley’s 8-5 win over Timberleand. Both Barwick and Lockliear have picked up a pair of wins in the season’s early going.
Berkeley’s tilt with Colleton County was postponed because of rain last Friday. The Stags host Summerville on Wednesday. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
For the St. John’s Christian Academy Cavaliers, the 2010 baseball season has been thrown a bit out of sync while repairs are made to their home field’s backstop and first base dugout after a light pole fell during last month’s snowstorm.
The Cavs have gotten off to a 1-2 start, dropping a heartbreaker to Calhoun Academy 11-10 and then playing shutout baseball, winning against Colleton Prep 11-0 and losing again to Calhoun 4-0 last Thursday.
The early Region 7-AA showdown between Timberland and Hanahan that would feature top rated pro and collegiate prospects Cody Craig and Bryce Hines in a head-to-head pitching match-up was postponed due to wet grounds and rain last Friday. The game, which has attracted the attention of several professional baseball scouts, has been rescheduled for March 22.
The Wolves stand at 3-3 and fell to Cane Bay last week 7-2.
In softball the Berkeley Lady Stags find themselves behind an eight ball. The Lady Stags fell to Colleton County 4-0 on just two hits and have played musical chairs in the season’s early going due to illness and injury plus having to fill vacancies due to graduation and transfers from last year’s squad.
Sophomore Chelsey Napier, in her third year of varsity play takes over the pitching duties full time following the departure of Taylor Luft, who transferred to Northwoods Academy.
Seniors Ashley Metts and Hannah Cato anchor the infield, Cato at first and Metts moving from third to short after Erica Kaufman moved on via graduation to play for the College of Charleston.
