A soggy Friday night was a quagmire of rain and mud where the game more resembled a good mud-wrestling bout, but that didn’t stop St. Johns from racking up 42 points on six touchdowns, 28 of those points coming in the third quarter as the Cavs upped their record to 6-2 (2-2 IA-2), with a 42-13 win over Palmetto Christian.
The night belonged to fullback Dexter Phillips who rushed for 102 yards and scored three touchdowns on a pair of goal-line stuffs up the gut from three yards out and a 30-yard scamper late in the fourth quarter.
C.J. Downey rushed for 142 yards, scoring twice, first on a 23-yard pass from quarterback Ellis Hammond and second on a 62-yard open field run for the game’s final score.
Hammond threw for a pair of TDs, the second a 27-yard strike to Brandon Biggs. Hammond was 6-of-7 through the air for 90 yards.
On defense, Jarid Wood led the Cavs with 10 tackles, Kevin Bellamy added eight tackles and Downey seven tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.
